Furniture and Bedding

The furniture and bedding industries have been faced with volatile pricing and supply of urethane foam products. Harness Technologies offers relief to these industries in  pricing, supply and performance.

Furniture

For upholstered furniture manufacturers, Harness Technologies offers a product that can be used in the following areas:

  • Backs and arms
  • Cushion wraps
  • Seat decking
  • Trim pads

For example, the pad base for framing in upholstered furniture, which includes the arms, back and rails, has been traditionally ½" to 1" low density polyurethane foam. This foam provides the base covering surface for the wood framing before applying the polyester batting. The Harness Technologies product can be used as a direct replacement for the foam in these applications.

In the above application, Harness Technologies material was offered to furniture manufacturers. The comments from the upholstery workers and management stated that the Harness Technologies material:

  • Performed as well as or better than previous foam materials in all applications
  • Has more strength than foam
  • Is easily bent and formed
  • Has virtually no difference in the feel of the finished product

Another property of the Harness Technologies material is that it is moldable and can be molded into products such as end caps.

Bedding

For the bedding industry, Harness Technologies' product can be used for reducing the amount of foam in the bedding construction.

For mattress construction using innersprings, some of the 2.5 pound foam used above the shoddy pad in 1" thick slabs can be replaced with the Harness materials. The choice of level of substitution depends upon the price and comfort levels of the mattress design.

Several mattress manufacturers and critical suppliers have agreed that the Harness Technologies product can be used in the first layer next to the shoddy pad and possibly more.

For solid core mattresses (such as the Tempur-Pedic) where 2.5 pound urethane foam is used to offset the very high cost of viscose foam and providing loft, Harness Technologies nonwoven pads can be used to directly substitute for the urethane foam.

Here is a summary of the ways Harness Technologies can help the furniture and bedding industries:

  • Cost. The Harness Technologies nonwoven pads will offer significant savings to users of urethane foam.
  • Supply. Since the Harness pad does not depend directly on volatile petroleum supplies, the availability of micro-fiber waste will ensure a steady stream of product to these industries.
  • Performance. The technology available in the manufacture of this nonwoven pad allows control of weight and densities and thus can be engineered for specific applications. In addition, the pad is moldable and can be supplied in preformed shapes.
